How to Sharpen Trebles!

By Dave Johnson - Bass Pro Radio.Com

Ever get a brand new lure and check the treble hooks for sharpness?  On many hard baits the hooks are dull!  There is an easy way to sharpen them before you have to replace the hooks!  Lets start by labeling the hook points so we have a reference.  We will call the points 1, 2, & 3.

To start I lay points 1 & 2 of the treble on my stone.  Then I move the hook back and forth along the stone.  After 5 or 6 trips up and down the stone I roll the treble so points 2 & 3 are now on the stone.  Again, 5 or 6 trips up and down the stone.  Then finally I roll the hook one more time so points 3 & 1 are now on the stone.  Again, 5 or 6 trips up and down the stone.  Now take the hook and try and pull it across your thumb nail.  If it is sharp, all 3 points will dig into your thumb nail and not drag across.  If one of the hook points drags on your nail, start the whole process over!!  When all else fails replace the hooks with Mustad Ultra Point Triple Grips!!
